Issue 99: 19th Annual Southern Music Issue & CD – Kentucky

The Commonwealth gave us musicians like Loretta Lynn and Nappy Roots, Richard Hell and Bill Monroe—just to name a very few—and beloved writers like Crystal Wilkinson, Ronni Lundy, Silas House, John Jeremiah Sullivan, and our own poetry editor, Rebecca Gayle Howell.

You’ll see those names (and many, many others) in the Oxford American’s newest Music Issue—“the greatest mixtape accompanied by the best liner notes ever,” according to Beale Street Caravan.

The issue includes a 160-page magazine and a 27-song CD + a free download with bonus tracks.

Our Kentucky Music Issue cover features photos of Sturgill Simpson, Loretta Lynn, J.D. Wilkes, Les McCann, and James Lindsey. (Photo credits: David McClister, Les Leverett, James Dechert, Dave Banks, and Steve Squall.) CD art: “The Flight Totem” by Bruce New.
